Oh man this is tough.
Welcome back to the 30 Day Anime Challenge, where I answer a topic of each day (seen above) and pretty much tell you my favorites in the many anime I’ve watched so far, for the duration of one month.
- You can see yesterday’s post, the first day/topic here.
I’ll be saying this for another 28 days, this is opinion based. I absolutely do not mind you telling me your favorite anime of all time but just don’t diss my choice because I definitely will not talk shit about yours.
So, I was thinking about this a lot today. What is my favorite anime?
When it comes to me, I usually rate shows based on the enjoyment. I feel like it’s a habit of mine to just think, “oh I really enjoyed this show so this is my favorite anime” and not gather all of the other components in the anime, to see if it’s on the same level as the enjoyment I had.
To be honest, I really shouldn’t be thinking about this a lot since a favorite anything should just come up in your mind immediately. But I think I know it now.
My favorite anime of all time is…
That is right, folks. Clannad (2007), the popular dramatic romance comedy, is my absolute favorite anime of all time.
If we’re talking about a whole series, the answer is Clannad. But if we’re talking about a single show/season, definitely Clannad: After Story.
I won’t go too in-depth with this show but the story is this:
A delinquent named Tomoya Okazaki thinks that life is boring and believes that he won’t achieve any goals in his life so in the meantime, he skips school and does his own thing, not caring about a thing.
He then meets this mysterious girl named Nagisa Furukawa, a shy individual, who likes to motivate herself. Tomoya sees her more and more around school, making him befriend her just because. He finds out that she wants to revive the theater club and make her dream come true of performing in a play. With the help of four other girls, Tomoya and Nagisa work hard to fulfill her wish.
Throughout the show, Tomoya finds out the different background stories of all the girls and helps all of them solve and overcome their obstacles in life.
After all that, we go to the second season of Clannad, Clannad: After Story. This time, we see Tomoya experience the good things, and especially the bad things in his adult life in this emotional roller coaster of an anime. Aaand, that’s all I can really talk about since most of the second season is spoilers.
So, this is a great show.
If you’ve heard about this show, you probably know that this show makes everyone cry. Well, you are correct lol. While first season’s story was good, but not great, second season is where it gets way better. In first season, we see a boy help out a mysterious girl, with the help of four other ladies. Then he finds out the dark backgrounds behind each girl and goes out of his way to help them all. It was pretty interesting. There was more drama than slice-of-life or comedy, which I still enjoyed but felt there was a bit too much.
But the second season, the level of drama goes through the roof and into outer space, and while it may sound like a bad thing, Kyoto Animation did it in a superb way.
The art isn’t that special. I heard complaints that the girls’ eyes were so big and that’s what made them not like the art style. But I really don’t mind. Either way, it was still nice to look at, especially the scenery, with the walkway to school and all the cherry tree pedals falling down onto the ground.
I was listening to the different songs from this series while writing this post and now I’m starting to regret it because it’s almost going to make me cry again. The music and soundtrack in this anime are just very, very, very appropriate for this show’s atmosphere and tone. From “Dango Daikazoku”, one of the most popular anime endings/songs of all time, to the calm and bittersweet soundtrack, pretty much all of the songs are nice to hear and are some real tearjerkers.
In conclusion, all of the things you’ve heard about this show are pretty much correct. This anime is filled with a lot of emotions, with sadness being expressed the most. All the amazing components in this show, the story, the music, the characters, and even the art really makes you enjoy this show a lot. So, if you feel like crying your eyes out for 50 episodes, or not, either way I highly suggest you watch this masterpiece.
