Good day to you and welcome to day 5 of the 30 Day Anime Challenge on the Alfredeo blog! If you happen to not know what this is, I’m following the schedule on that picture above and answering the topics like what my favorite anime is or what is my favorite anime fight scene, for the duration of one month. Today’s topic is an anime that I’m ashamed I enjoyed. Also, this is opinion based, if you’re thinking about dissing my choices throughout this challenge, I suggest you shouldn’t. You should instead comment your choice and I will respect your decision. Thanks!
Japan can make some weird shows. There is no secret to that. While I haven’t seen the extremely odd shows in my anime watching lifetime, this one is probably the weirdest one I’ve seen in a while.
Hanamaru Kindergarten (2010) is a slice-of-life comedy made by Gainax, who also created shows like Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Neon Genesis Evangelion and FLCL, which are all shows that are definitely on the same level as this one.
Let me let MyAnimeList give you the gist of this anime:
Anzu goes to a kindergarten with her friends, the shy Koume and the eccentric Hiiragi. Together they try to attract attention from their caretaker Tsuchida. However, he is clearly more interested in the pretty Yamamoto who supervises the class next door.
Yep. While they don’t say it clearly in the synopsis, Anzu, the main kindergartener, has a massive crush on Tsuchida and is pretty damn serious about wanting to date him… and she will do anything to get his attention.
To sum it up, it has people having weird crushes, kawaii children and some decent comedy.
Right from the start of this show, I already got weirded out. We see Anzu, the energetic kindergarten student, talk about adult-like subjects to Tsuchida, like how he’s “hitting on her” and even her later wearing a, what I think is, a swimsuit more for adults. I know that this is a comedy anime and I really shouldn’t be taking this seriously, but something about that isn’t right lol
This show is filled with moments where you think “why the hell am i watching this”, “why are they saying these things” and “what do parents teach their kids nowadays?”.
This is a spoiler but Anzu’s mother fell in love with her teacher while she was in high school. This made Anzu’s mom drop out of school to start a family with that teacher, which produced Anzu. Now, I do not want to offend anybody here but those kinds of relationships shown in quite a lot of anime just make me feel uneasy. Now that kind of thinking has gone to her child and can possibly repeat with Anzu and Tsuchida having a relationship.
But, in the end, I seriously shouldn’t take this anime seriously because behind all that weirdness, it’s genuinely a fun show to watch. The entertaining ways Anzu, Hiiragi and Koume get Tsuchida’s attention are both kawaii and funny.
So in conclusion, this show is actually something I am ashamed of enjoying. If I show this anime to one of my friends, I don’t think they would want to talk to me anymore haha
I hope you found that decently interesting. This topic was kind of hard to talk about so I apologize if this was not written well.
Come back tomorrow for the anime that I absolutely want to watch but I haven’t gotten to do so!
