No, no, no, the anime character I hate isn’t Chiyo. Sorry for making you think that.

Welcome back to the 30 Day Anime Challenge on the Alfredeo Blog! This is the segment where I talk about the different topics related to anime from the list above on their respective days. It’s been pretty, pretty fun so far so check out the other topics if you haven’t!

Also, this is opinion based, so please do not make rude comments about my choices. Instead, please give your opinion on today’s topic and I’ll be glad to read it!

So, as you probably seen in the title, today’s topic is an anime character that gets on my nerves. Let’s just cut to the chase, so here she is!

Ume Kurumizawa from Kimi ni Todoke (2009), a romance comedy drama by Production I.G..

** there will be spoilers so if you haven’t watched this show and you want to, you might want to click away right now, i warned you **

Okay, I know that Kurumi went into some deep shit when she was in middle school such as being called a “boyfriend stealer” and being used by people who she thought were her friends. I get that. That’s horrible to hear. But, she still irritated me when I was watching this show, no doubt.

Let me give you some background, or refresh your memory if you’ve seen this show: Kurumi has had a big crush on Shota Kazehaya, the main male character, since first year of middle school. But as I said, she got caught in the horrible rumor mill and was even being used by her “friends”, making her not trust anybody anymore. Now that they are in high school, she finds out that Kazehaya is getting along with a girl named Sawako Kuronuma, the main female protagonist in this show, which makes her extremely jealous. Also, Kurumi puts on a fake personality, being very nice and supportive to Sawako at first, but when it comes to Kazehaya, she doesn’t joke around and always expresses her love for him. She also got really angry that Sawako didn’t have to do anything to get Kazehaya’s affection, while Kurumi had to work and work to get Kazehaya to look at her.

So, because of that jealousy, Kurumi went as far as to spread rumors about Sawako’s great and only friends, Ayane Yano and Chizuru Yoshida, using Sawako’s name as the perpetrator.

It was so painful to see Ayane and Chi feel so down about those dumb rumors and their friendship with Sawako starting to crumble, even though Sawako didn’t do anything. I seriously wanted that part of the story to resolve quickly so I didn’t have to experience anymore of that.

Another time Kurumi set off one of her evil plans is when she set up Sawako with Ryu, Kazehaya’s best friend. Kurumi manages to get Kazehaya to see that interaction, tells him that Sawako confessed her love for Ryu and even suggests to him to support their relationship, which Kazehaya at that point, has feelings for Sawako. It was obviously a misunderstanding but oh man, I really couldn’t let that sink in and that was some dirty ass playing by Kurumi.

In the end, she realized she couldn’t compete with Sawako but she still becomes Sawako’s rival and is still determined to get Kazehaya to love her in the future.

In conclusion, while Kurumi was a great addition to the story and had some really good character development, she still pissed me off. Now, I haven’t watched second season of Kimi ni Todoke so I’m not sure if she’ll be back to make some dirty plays again.

  1. Kurumi is great in season 2. She has given up on Kazehaya but isn’t above occasionally teasing Sawako. She really continues to get some great character development as a side character.
I kind of have to agree with you on this one though. As a character, Kurumi is really great and a much needed source of tension in the story. In real life, anyone who acted like Kurumi would make me so angry.
